Not to mention, men’s aloha shirts and boxers, women’s apparel and accessories, scented lotions and soaps. There’s so much to see and discover in the tiny shop, you’ll have to make two or three rounds to see it all. “We love when someone finds just what they are looking for, it means we’ve helped spread more aloha around the world. Established in 1976.
Sally Mermel, a former school teacher, opened “The Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo” (MISH) on Keawe Street in Downtown Hilo. She and her father decorated and painted the tiny 150 sqft. store, and sold merchandise she ordered from a catalog. Later she opens “Bears Coffee” next door, and a second “Most Irresistible Shop, Too!” in Prince Kuhio Plaza, which eventually she sells but keeps her original MISH store and moves to its current location at 256 Kamehameha Avenue on Bayfront in the heart of Downtown Hilo. 1998-Sally meets Tracie Yoshimoto, who loved to shop at MISH as a little girl. Their paths cross again in 2005, and Sally mentions she may one day sell MISH. Tracie gives Sally her phone number, and Sally puts it in her wallet. 2013-After 37 years in business and approaching the lively age of 70, Sally is ready to spend more time in her Volcano Village garden and travel. She finds Tracie’s phone number in her wallet and calls….
