We are a small grocery store that supplies the surrounding community with general groceries (including fresh produce, meat and dairy), a wide selection of alcohol (wine, beer and liquor), household and pharmaceutical products, school supplies, tobacco products, and other miscellaneous items. We also sell and redeem both state and national lottery tickets. Additionally, customers have access to a lottery scratcher ticket vending machine, a Redbox DVD rental machine and an ATM, all found within our establishment.
Originally established as the University General Store in the 50’s, it wasn’t until the Johnson family claimed ownership in 1965 that the Isla Vista Market came to be. Mr. Johnson had been an employee at the general store and was so diligent and devoted to his work that the current owner made him an affordable deal and passed down the establishment to Mr. Johnson and his wife. They took their new opportunity and ran with it; the store was renamed to Isla Vista Market and revamped to reflect the Johnsons’ character and to appeal to the local community. It has since been passed down to the Johnson’s three children, each of whom does their part to keep the business thriving. We now have a third generation of Johnsons involved as social media, merchandising and general managers, as well as checkers and stockers. We continue to grow and hope to remain a prominent contribution to Isla Vista for years to come.
