Vegan Haven (formerly Sidecar for Pigs Peace) specializes in vegan food and products such as wallets and belts. We also have a growing selection of gluten-free and soy-free foods, and try to choose organic and fair trade products as well. We have a variety of treats and snacks, grab and go lunches, and exclusive, hard-to-find items (including imported vegan cheese).
Established in 2005.
Sidecar On the Ave was founded by 3 friends who saw that Seattle could support a vegan store. One of the original owners was a fan of the 40s era, in particular a popular mixed drink called the Sidecar. Hence the name. Shortly, though, the 3 friends went in different directions, and they sold the store to Pigs Peace Sanctuary, making it the only non-profit vegan store in the nation. We kept « Sidecar » for continuity, tacking « for Pigs Peace » on to the name. In early 2009, Sidecar paid the last of the significant external debt, freeing up more money that can help support our animal friends at Pigs Peace Sanctuary. It’s working! In late 2012, with the participation from the community, the store was renamed Vegan Haven, to better describe the store. At Vegan Haven, your money does triple-duty: it supports the market of vegan products, it does *not* line the pockets of meat-eaters and meat-selling stores, and it helps care for loved, happy animals. How great is that?!Doh D.
Manager
Doh became the store manager in late 2007, bringing a wealth of retail, grocery, and small-business knowledge. She spent several years running a multi-faceted family restaurant and store, and over the course of 20 years managed various retail stores, including years as Team Leader of Whole Foods Market’s nutrition department in two locations. Equally important is her vegan experience and ethics, as well as her drive for excellent customer service. She has guided Sidecar for Pigs Peace out of debt, on the philosophy that if you stock it, they will come; a philosophy that has driven Sidecar’s growth. Before Doh, this little « non-profit that could » was steered by Peggy Wasman, whose skill at balancing the tight financials of a new business with customer desires helped Sidecar through the first few years, when most small businesses fail. Peggy set Doh, and Sidecar, up for success.
