Hip opened in 1996 in what was formerly the warehouse for HK Limited. In 1996, owner of HK Limited, David Haleston closed all the remaining HK stores and converted the warehouse into a casual warehouse showroom featuring Natuzzi Italian leather imported directly from Italy in full containiers. In 2003, Hip opened the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams signature store on West Burnside. 4 Years later in 2007, Hip opened an 11,000 sq ft store in Beaverton featuring Natuzzi and Bo Concept. Bank bailouts and the 2008 recession caused the new store to be closed. Mitchell Gold was sold back the West Burnside store opening Jan. 2010. Hip now operates in it’s owner occupied space ust off Thurman at NW 25th Avenue.

For years, the current location for Hip was the Warehouse for a piece of Portland History: HK Limited. When HK closed in the mid 90s, Dave saw the opportunity to open a place where Modern Furniture could expand in Portland. Ever since, Hip has done just that; with lines spanning the globe and friendly staff that makes furniture shopping actually fun.
