Bob (Founder) peddled granola around Berkeley and Davis in the early 70s. He then began a small business called Gilman Gourmet in what is now Berkeley Natural Grocery. In 1981 The Natural Grocery Company was born. Grounded in a desire to nourish our community with high quality, wholesome foods, we do the research and select the best, local, Non-GMO, organic products so that you may shop with ease and trust.

Bob Gerner founded the business in order to fill a gap in the local grocery offerings. He was inspired and determined to provide healthy, nourishing, organic foods to his community. That vision is still the lifeline of our company mission. We continue to choose products that are Non-GMOs, organic and local while operating our business according to green business practices. It gives us great pleasure to be an anchor for organic, natural foods in Berkeley and El Cerrito.
