Established in 1976.
In 1976, with some assistance from funds raised at a UT ZZ Top concert, a grou of serious cooperators got together to start Wheatsville Food Co-op in the basement at 29th and Lamar. Back then, we were run by “turnups,” co-opers who “turned up” to work. They built and stocked the shelves, unloaded the trucks, did construction work, and cleaned the floors. In 1981 we relocated to our current site at 3101 Gudalupe and became a true neighborhood grocery. In 2009, we completed a complete and major renovation and expansion of our store and added more space and services while maintaining the feel and spirit that has always embodied our co-op!
