South Coast Furniture & Mattress and Secondhand Store is a family business that started in 1957 when the first of the three shop buildings – the Secondhand Store – was built by Richard Ross after he retired to San Clemente with his wife Alma and their two boys, Richard and Dale. Son Richard and his wife Nancy eventually took over the business and added the neighboring building to make room for mattress sales when Alma and her sister retired and closed their Sleep Shop on El Camino Real. With the addition of new furniture, the name South Coast Furniture & Mattress was added, and expansion into the third building soon followed. Dale and Mary took over in 2001 and continue to add new merchandise and showroom space to this unique family business.
