We began in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh in 1935. My grandfather, Raphael Moio, had worked his way west from New York City once immigrating from Calabria, Italy in 1913. He opened his own pastry shop on Larimer Ave. in East Liberty. His oldest son, Anthony (my father) came into the business after returning from duty in WW2. We remained in East Liberty until 1972 when my father moved the bakery to the Monroeville Mall Annex. Our store thrived in its new location, where we made lots of new friends! Sadly, in 1976/77 I lost both of my parents. At the age of 19, I unexpectedly became the new owner of Moio’s Italian Pastry Shop. With help from my uncles, aunt, and sister, I grew into the position. Moio’s continued to grow and prosper; so, in 1991, I moved the store to its present location. After 80 years of Sfogliatelle, Rum Cakes, and Cannoli, Moio’s Italian Pastry Shop is baking into the 21st century with the same care showed by young Raphael Moio back in 1935. Tony Moio

I’m the third generation owner of a classic Italian Pastry Shop. I was thrust into the position at 19 years old with the sudden passing of my father and mother. My uncles Ralphy and Bobby , my aunt Dolly, and my little sister Michelle were here at the bakery to help me grow and learn the position. I married one of my sales girls, Meg Owens, in 1983 and together we’ve continued the tradition of quality and service started by my grandfather, Raphael, and expanded by my father, Anthony. My son Max, and my daughter Lisa have worked with us in the bakery also. Lisa has taken an instrumental role in helping Meg and I continue our excellent reputation into the 21st century.
