Modelhom (formally Model Home Furnishings) began in September of 2002 when the housing market began it’s historical rise. With help from good friends, an effective business model and hard work, MHF was off and running. By 2003, we knew we had a viable business and committed to a humble 1500 sq ft building in Nipomo, CA. We continued to work with builders and designers, our direct residential business was thriving and we quickly outgrew our space. In 2005, we moved to a much larger space in Grover Beach, CA where we reside today. In 2012, discussions began to rebrand our business to reflect not just our product offering but our exceptional relational service. We also wanted to create a more simplified company name that was unique but still closely tied to our original name. In 2013, Model Home Furnishings was renamed modelhom (and modelhom.com) and continues to serve clients both locally and statewide.

James Deering Co-Founder/Business Development
Born in San Luis Obispo and raised in Arroyo Grande, James graduated in Business Management and Marketing from Cal Poly. He held various management and marketing positions on the central coast before using his talents to run Modelhom. Aside from his faith and passion for business, James loves spending time with family and friends, playing tennis, drumming and surfing. James is married to Karen and has three children.

Karen Deering Co-Founder/Designer
Karen has had a passion for design since she was a young girl. She would often rearrange her parents’ furniture and instead of buying clothes like her friends, she would go wherever she could to find unique pieces of furniture. After finishing art and design classes at Cuesta College and Interior Design at Cal Poly, she started a small one-day decorating business. This quickly turned into a furniture and design company and eventually became Modelhom.
