Established in 1954.
Carlton and Phyllis Layne opened a little store right after they were married. They sold lots of fresh vegetables, apples, fruits and grocery items. Over the years as the economy changed they had to adapt to the customers needs and wants. They added lots of new things including amish made jams, jellies, butters, relishes and pickled products. Deli meats were added later. Upon request you could get a bologna sandwich. Layne’s later became a destination , not only for locals, but for tourists also. People would make this a regular stop when the came through Virginia. Travel and Leisure ran a story about the store and so did Southern Living. Phyllis passed away in 1999 and Carlton kept the store going until 2012 when he died. It was then that their two sons Mike and Steve, along with Carlton’s grandkids and great grandkids. took over running the store. The old wood stove is still in place, and Layne’s reputation is still largely spread by word-of-mouth.Steve and Mike L.
Business Owner
Mike and Steve grew up in the store. They have a love of retail and enjoy people. I guess the inherited it from their parents. No Records Found
