Lakewinds Food Co-op

All are welcome — there’s no membership required to shop at Lakewinds! We’re a community-owned, natural foods grocery store. Our produce is on average 95% organic and as local as possible, and our meat is sustainably, locally raised. Lakewinds reads the label for you. We evaluate all of our products, so there are no artificial colors or flavors, no high fructose corn syrup, no hydrogenated oil, no sulfites, and no nitrates or nitrites, to name a few ingredients we do not allow. Plus we have clean skin and beauty care items, a deli that makes food from scratch every day, and more. Feel secure when you shop, knowing that Lakewinds only allows high-quality food that’s delicious, good for you and your family, and better for the planet.

Lakewinds began in 1972, when Edie Green, Helen Davis & Edith Stodola founded the Minnetonka Buying Club. In 1975 the club officially became a co-op and moved into the recognizable “Red Shack” behind St. Luke Church. The co-op moved a few times before settling into its current neighborhood and becoming Lakewinds Natural Foods. With the Minnetonka store a major success, Lakewinds looked for a second location. Chanhassen opened its doors in 2005. At the same time, a long-desired building west of the Minnetonka store became available–an opportunity too good to pass up. The new Minnetonka store opened in 2006. In 2014, our third store location opened in Richfield, thanks in large part to our generous owners, who loaned us $1.8 million for the project. In 2014 we also changed our name to Lakewinds Food Co-op, accurately reflecting who we are, what we sell, and how we function as a community owned-and-operated business.
