Lafayette Bakery & Cafe

We bring traditional french bread, pastries, and treats straight from Lyon to the Monterey bay area. Fresh baguettes, croissants, macarons, quiche, and many other savory and sweet goodness are available daily at Lafayette Bakery.

Established in 2013.
After many bakeries in both France and even Ireland, the Vial family decided to bring their well known breads and delicacies to the United States. In early 2013 they left France and came to the United States. They found and fell in love with Carmel in California and the people that were in the area, so they decided to make Carmel their new home. They endured many struggles while adjusting to having a bakery outside of Europe but soon found the right suppliers for flour and ingredients that they needed (although Lafayette still imports butter from France). You can now taste the breads, buns, croissants, and pastries of Lafayette Bakery not only in the shop, but in many of the restaurants, hotels, resorts, and cafes in the area. Now led by owner/baker Marion Vial and her team consisting of long time friends baker Florent Tavardon, and pastry chef Axel Maillet, they are making plans to bring an even bigger and better taste of France to the central coast.

Baker of 16 years Marion Vial almost stayed in France but made a last minute decision to come to the United States in 2013 and open another bakery with her family. Lafayette Bakery has since become her passion, so much so that her father Jean Bernard gave her the bakery and went home to open another bakery right outside of Lyon. Marion does it all. Even though she is a Master with dough she can hold her own on the patisserie side as well, holding down the pastry chef spot for a few years until Axel was welcomed into the Lafayette family. You will always know when Marion is there cause the bakery brightens up with her cheerful attitude as well as her smile and sense of fun. She always loves talking to customers and helping out wherever she can, her selflessness and desire to make people feel great through baked goods and a bright smile is well known, and a reason all of us at the bakery love and look up to her.
