The specialty home-furnishings store, whose name is Spanish for “The Green House on Granada,” opened in late 2009 featuring salvaged and refurbished decorative items of just about every type. Owners Jim and Ellen Bodas, longtime artists and recyclers, didn’t want to do it alone, so they invited several artists and antique pickers to join with them to create what they intended to be a source of quality handmade bargain goods you couldn’t find anywhere else. “Our place is like a scavenger hunt,” Ellen Bodas said. “It makes it easy for people to keep coming in; it’s always changing.”

The couple first came to San Clemente in 1995 with the purchase of an Ole Hanson-era home with a triplex on their property.

While working other jobs, the Bodases started giving new life to discarded and salvaged items with the goal of opening their own store. They bought an Ole Hanson home on Avenida Granada in 1998, and it became the location of their store after a preschool that was renting the site closed in early 2009.

“We always had the idea of coming to San Clemente – it’s a great community,” Jim said. “We had a flower shop in Irvine … I remember walking on the beach here and thinking about the store we wanted to open.”

When the preschool closed, “we started right in and opened after a six-month remodel,” he said.

Ellen tells of a shopper who visited the store just before Christmas last year and found a painting done by his grandmother.

“He bought it, of course.”
