Please call for extended hours, esp. in summer and holiday times. We are often here earlier/later than the promised hours This tiny shop specializes in very unique and affordable heirloom quality jewelry, most notably genuine sea glass and upcycled surfboard resin. Because this space is also the home of their wholesale and online retail operations, they carry what may well be the largest selection of bezel-set genuine sea glass jewelry, well, anywhere. With hundreds of pendants, earrings and rings to choose from (sizes 4-10!), you will find the perfect ocean gem. Owner and surfer Donna von Hoesslin Pu’u designs most of the offerings and works with a wide range of craftsmen and women to create her designs, which also include unique belts, sterling silver, wood, sea shell and leather pieces. The recent addition of the Ocean Room Gallery, adjacent to the shop, features the stunning ocean photography David Pu’u, Donna’s husband. Betty Belts started as a wholesale surf company making beaded shell belts. The owner and designer, Donna von Hoesslin, is a surfer and wanted to start a business that would allow her to combine her passion (surfing) with a socially responsible business. People ask “Why ‘Betty’ Belts?” The name came from the term Betty, which is often used in the surfing (and snowboarding) world for a female participant in the sport, i.e. “Surf Betty”. Today Betty Belts is still a totally independent brand that provides a diverse selection of jewelry and bags that includes the retail storefront, an online shop and, of course, wholesale.Donna V.
Business Owner
I’m a Surfer, ocean lover, activist for conscious consumerism and ethical business, muse, and community creative in my small beach town of Ventura.I spent most of my adult life living in Berlin, exposed amazing realm of creativity that surrounded me in arts, music, fashion and everything cutting edge that is cultivated in such an amazing city.
Then I discovered surfing on a trip. Eventually it became a force of passion too strong to resist. I moved back to California after 17 years of expat living, determined to find a way to make my new passion a part of my everyday life.
It didn’t take long to start my company, Betty Belts, and immerse myself and it into surf culture. I even created an all-girls surf team and have sponsored countless surf events for women.
That was 16 years ago and I’m still loving what I do, love the people I work with and and still get to surf several times a week. ; )
