Bear Flag Fish Company was founded in 2007. Bear Flag Fish Company specializes in the freshest seafood in town. The creation of the company started with the love of the ocean and most of all the love and the knowledge of fresh seafood.

Although the original concept of the Bear Flag Fish Co. was as a Fish Market, that concept has morphed into what is probably the finest casual fish grill in all of Orange County. The menu is not really a menu at all, but rather a listing of wonderful ideas that owner Thos offers his dedicated customers. He wants to them to know that they can pretty much get the fresh seafood any way they would like. Fresh Fish Rice Bowls with Asian grilled veggies, Grilled Basa Fish Burritos and Panko Grilled Fish Tacos are just some of those “suggestions”. From his case, the Newport locals can order his selection of Hawaiian Poke, House Cured Salmon Lox, Ahi Sashimi and fresh Oysters on the Half Shell. And from the sparkling clean open kitchen you can smell the Homemade Chowder and bowls of Cioppino cooked to order. It’s not only the seafood that’s fresh, but also his house made salsas, remoulades, cocktail sauce and their masterful creations the Bear Flag Home Grown Hot Sauce,

Thomas “Thos” Carson is the young owner and proprietor and the son of legendary fisherman Tom Carson. Thos named his Seafood Market and Grill, after his fathers harpoon boat, The Bear Flag that is docked on the waterfront, just a couple blocks down the Lido.

He is literally a product of the Pacific himself and treats the seafood that is harnessed from this body of water, with the respect and attention to freshness and quality that we’ve never seen here in Newport. Thos has spent the bulk of his young life honing his craft by working in some the top seafood counters.

When Thos approached his Dad with the concept of creating a local Fish Market with the namesake Bear Flag identity, Tom Carson was less than optimistic, but supportive nonetheless. Other than a little help from his Dad to purchase the gorgeous fish case that serves as an altar piece at this holy fish house, Thos did this all on his own.
