ALTA Bakery & Cafe

Not just your basic bakery and coffee shop, Alta offers specialty coffee drinks, house-made chai and syrups; unique pastries, cakes & tarts; fresh baked breads; a cooked to order menu featuring obligatory avocado toast, salmon toast, daily soups, salads, bowls, pizzas, paninis, and more. Enjoy a beer, glass of wine or one of our several mimosas in our beautiful garden. Stroll through the orchard and Cooper Molera Museum, or just relax. We are having some kind of fun here – and we’ve only just begun!

Alta Bakery Café opened in April at the historic Cooper Molera Adobe – a 2.5 acre National Trust in downtown Monterey featuring Alta Bakery + Café, gardens galore, orchards, The Barns and a museum. We have garden dining as well as our charming Diaz Adobe for indoor seating. Ben Spungin and his baker, Matt Somerville are well known for their craft in Big Sur, Carmel Valley and the Monterey Peninsula. The Diaz Adobe is also available for private dinners. So much fun to be had here!

Ben Spungin was previously pastry chef at The Post Ranch and Bernardus Lodge and also worked with Thomas Keller at the French Laundry. Ben is well known for his creative cakes, hand-painted chocolates, and unique pastries and tarts as well as his innovative café menu items. It has been Ben’s dream for years to open his own bakery – and Alta is that and so much more. Ben looks forward to producing winemaker dinners, guest chef dinners, rehearsal dinners and more on this exceptionally beautiful property.
