We started out at farmers markets and events, wanting to showcase our love for Asian pastries. There are very few Asian bakeries in Arizona and we decided to teach ourselves how to make some of our favorite pastries. Our favorite pastry is a coconut or cocktail bun. It is a fluffy, sweet milk bread with a coconut filling inside and how our name came about. We are a home based bakery with delivery options and online classes.

The spirit of Happy Buns is to show the diversity of sweets and what other culture’s food looks like. We wanted to bring our favorite Asian sweet bun from San Francisco, coconut buns, to Arizona. There have been challenges in getting the word out about Happy Buns. Often, people at farmers’ markets are looking for sweets that are not Asian pastries since the concept of Asian pastries may be new. Asian pastries may consist of sweet, baked buns while Western pastries may comprise of a lot of cakes. As more people come from other states or countries, food diversity and the growth of ethnic businesses will change people’s perceptions. Our goal is to play a role in people discovering new foods and continue to be creative.
