Established in 1937 Herman Haimsohn opened Lawrance under the name Modern Furniture Company in 1937. The store was located in downtown San Diego, and even from the very beginning, offered contemporary furniture and appliances. After just a few short years in that location, Herman decided to move the store to the blossoming melting-pot of art and culture, Hillcrest. As the store continued to thrive, Herman turned Modern Furniture Company into a family business by introducing his son Ed to the company. By 1950, just months after Ed took over the family business, Herman Haimsohn passed away. Already offering some contemporary designs, Ed’s landmark decision was to hone the focus of the store to strictly offer high quality contemporary furnishings. in 1956, Ed’s family grew as well with the birth of his son Howard. While still in college Howard began working the family business. By the early ’80s Howard became president and changed the company’s name to Lawrance Furniture.
